What are bone conduction headphones? Unlike normal headphones which use tiny speakers inside or on top of the ear canal, bone conduction headsets press against the side of the head close to the ears with the sound transmitted directly through the bones of the head. This sounds a bit weird but it works perfectly well with the advantage that you are fully aware of the environment around you and will hear the truck that is bearing down on you. Inside the rather upmarket branded product box were the headphones themselves together with a short charging cable and a well written but rather brief user guide. Build quality all seems fine. The headset band is slimline and very flexible, going around the head with the buds resting on the side of the face in front of the upper part of each ear, not over it. Unlike with conventional earbuds, there are no speaker grills or ports as sound is transmitted directly through the plastic casing of the headset. The headset is controlled through the physical, not touch, buttons on one of the two headband pods, the other housing the 160 mAh battery. There are buttons for Volume Up/Power On/ff, and Volume Down as well as a gromett protected USB-C power in port. There being no charging case, the headset is charged directly through the USB-C port. Charging takes one to two hours and will give you ten hours of music time and up to a week on standby. Long press the Vol/Power button to turn the headset on and off and it will automatically power down after five minutes without a connection. This headset uses the latest version of Bluetooth, version 5.4, which makes for easier pairing and gives improved range, sound quality and freedom from dropouts. When pairing look for: Sanag B21S. There is also a Sanag app, which offers some audio presets including “SS qvp stereo” which is a type of a 360-degree or immersive sound, track navigation and a real time battery indicator. There is also a white noise and sleep aid page and a link to join the Santag AI community. No doubt other features will be added in due course. I found call quality to be excellent, with clear and well defined speech clearly audible at a decent volume at both ends. All the usual track control, audio and Personal Assistant features can accessed either from the headset buttons or using the app. At the end of the day, the most important feature has to be the sound quality. I have to say that this headset does not disappoint and has given me the best audio quality I have yet experienced from a bone conduction headset. Plenty of rich bass, a mid range that is both clear and well defined, and a high end that is neither too sharp or sibilant. However, positioning on the head is very important both to get the best bass and audio quality and to avoid unpleasant vibration to the skin. Bone conduction headsets are not for everyone, but I think for the current AliExpress price of just ￡22.59, you will do well to find a better one.
