2024 End of the Year Lists
This was a weirdly good year to be an EP 11 ED. Finally get to show what are easily the top 3 songs of the year. One of the strongest Top 5s in these lists, though similar to movies once you get out of the top 10 there's a pretty steep drop-off. Still a solid top 50 though. Rules: I counted anything that played for 1 ep, with the exception of cast songs that have a different version in every episode (Love Live! Superstar!! 3rd Season, Chou Futsuu Ken Chiba Densetsu). A both incredibly small and dismal year for movie songs. Even the COVID-affected 2020 dwarfed this year's count. I think a lot of it is the complete decline of OVAs, you can literally count the amount of OVAs with songs in them on one hand this year. While the top 4 are great, there is an extreme drop-off after than with 8th already being below an 8.5. Notes: As usual, visuals for movies that aren't released yet come from PVs, or if there's no PV with the song official lyric videos. This is easily the strongest year since at least 2021, with a whole 3 shows managing a single digit average and a good amount averaging below 25th. Rules: All songs must be paired together for at least 2 episodes. Songs can only be counted once for a pairing. The average rank (green number) is calculated by taking an average of the songs rank in my OP and ED lists. Ties are broken by whichever show had a song with the highest ranking. Songs can have started in a different year as long as the pairing started this year, in which case the previous year song is placed a decimal in it's respective list. Notes: (1/2) means it's a pairing between OP 1 and ED 2, (2) means OP and ED 2 and so on. The first song shown is the one that did better in it's respective list. Yostar Pictures be like, We have way too much money, let's spend it on the most useless thing we can spend money on, OP/ED visuals! This was actually a pretty strong year, I think things that would have made my top 20 last year didn't even make my top 30 this year. Reminder that things I look for in a visual that help it stand out are: Widescreen, callbacks to previous OP/ED of the series, interesting use of credits/integrated credits, integrated lyrics, camera spins, interesting camera angles (think smartphone shots, first person POV), cool color/art schemes, synching really well with the song, minimal use of color, the color pink, and well animated dances apparently. The name at the top is the director of each of the OP/ED in the list with the one exception of number 12, because I felt like while Yoshie Kita is the director of it, the heavy lifting is done by the other two with how their names were credited above Kita and in a much bigger font. Notes: Link Click II actually had a Japanese airing back in Spring using the original Chinese songs.
